Brentford 2 Sheff Utd 0

Brentford welcomed bottom of the table Sheff Utd to the Gtech Community Stadium. This was a crucial game for Thomas Frank’s side with them sitting too close for comfort to the bottom three. For The Blades, they were heading towards the point where it would be mathematically impossible to stay up.

As an attack for the hosts broke down, Brereton Diaz burst forward with no one in support. He had only one option, to go for goal himself. As he dribbled the ball towards goal, his final effort had no power on it to cause Flekken any problems in the Brentford goal.

The Bees’ front three were starting to link up well in the final third. Maupay received the ball in the box and laid it off to Janelt on the edge of the box. He just could not find the finish as his effort was comfortably saved by Grbic in the visitors’ goal.

Wissa did well down the left flank and found Jensen in space outside the box. He decided to try and test the Sheff Utd keeper but once again the finish lacked quality. His shot was straight at Grbic who gratefully fell onto the ball.

The visitors then got themselves into trouble trying to play out from the back. A misplaced pass gifted the ball to Mbuemo. He played it into the path of Maupay who just got a toe to the ball before the keeper met him. His effort went agonisingly wide of the near post.

Chris Wilder’s side had offered very little in an attacking sense for the entire first half. After the break they seemed to have more hunger to do just that. As the move broke down it gave The Bees the chance to stretch their defence.

As Damsgaard ran down the right flank, he looked to pick out a Brentford player in the box. His cross took a deflection off Arblaster and headed into the far corner of the goal. It summed up the season so far for The Blades. Nothing seemed to be going their way.

Sheff Utd managed to create their first real opening of the game when a ball crossed into the back post found Bogle. His header was too tame and Flekken had a routine save to make to ensure that Brentford held onto their lead.

Thomas Frank’s side won a free kick in a wide area when Mbuemo was fouled. He got up to take the set piece and clipped a ball towards an unmarked Damsgaard on the edge of the box. His volley went into the bottom corner to give the hosts some breathing space in the game.

Sadly for the Brentford fans their joy was short-lived. VAR adjudged there to be a foul in the build-up and the Dane’s goal was to be chalked off. Frank’s side continued to pile the pressure on in search of that second goal to seal all three points.

Lewis-Potter was the next player to test Grbic in the Sheff Utd goal. He received the ball in the final third and looked to dribble it towards goal. As he looked to bend one in the far corner, the keeper made a good stop to turn it behind for a corner.

Deep into added time, Schade flicked on a throw in which Onyeka ran onto to, poking the ball past Grbic and into the back of the net. The stadium erupted as Brentford ensured that they were going to get a much-needed win.

The victory takes them seven points clear of Luton Town, as they look to confirm their Premier League status for another season. For Sheff Utd, it is hard to see how they are going to get out of the situation they find themselves in. Despite their best intentions, they just concede too many goals.
