Brentford 3 Burnley 0

Thomas Frank’s side went into this game in their worst run of form for some time, despite having put in a good display at Old Trafford, in an encounter they should have won. The visitors to the Gtech Community Stadium were Burnley, who themselves had only managed a solitary win all season.

Brentford had the first chance of the game as they lofted a free kick into the back post, where it was crossed across goal by Collins, with Maupay heading home. The flag immediately went up for offside, denying the striker a goal on his second debut for The Bees.

The replay showed that it was a ludicrous decision as neither Collins nor Maupay were offside. The Mr Magoo VAR studio strikes again. It is called human error for a reason but is unacceptable when you have all the technology they do, to still keep getting it wrong so often, is hard to bare.

It did not take Brentford long to right that wrong as Maupay found Mbuemo who played a brilliant ball into the back post to find Wissa who netted the easy chance. Thomas Frank will be hoping this front three will start linking up well, with goals being in demand for his side of late.

Maupay then went close again as he was played through, but Trafford got a touch to his shot and it was enough to slow it down so the Burnley defence could clear it off the line. The Everton loanee was making a lively start to his second Brentford stint.

Towards the end of the first half, Connor Roberts was shown probably the most bizarre yellow card of the weekend as he was cautioned for throwing a second ball onto the pitch to slow down play. The Burnley defender did not complain with the decision at all.

From the resulting throw in, it was flicked on and Maupay spun on it to shoot but Trafford made a brilliant save to tip it over the crossbar. Searching for his first goal in thirty games, the striker must have been wondering whether he had built his house on an ancient Indian burial site.

He did turn provider when he laid the ball off to Mbuemo outside the box who flashed a stunning strike into the top corner, leaving Trafford with no chance. It was nothing more than Brentford deserved and gave them the cushion of a two-goal lead in the game.

If Burnley do not manage to stay up this season, the next phase of play will no doubt be included in some sort of a showreel to underline why. The Clarets broke with real pace and as Foster darted down the left, he squared the ball to two players at the back post, with Koleosho then missing an open goal. Crazy stuff.

Things went from bad to worse as a long ball was played over the defence and Wissa was hauled to the ground by Connor Roberts who was shown a second yellow card and sent off. No arguments from any of the Burnley players or coaching staff.

Frank’s side added a well-deserved third when Ghoddos hit a wonder-strike from outside the box, thundering off the inside of the post on its way into the goal. Brentford took all three points and Vincent Kompany’s worries worsen as he tries to plot their safety in the big time.
