Brentford 3 Luton Town 1

Two sides met at the Gtech Community Stadium who only fourteen years ago, were playing each other in League Two. Both sides have been on incredible journeys since then, with the hosts having made themselves a regular fixture in the Premier League.

The Bees started the more positive and from a well-practised corner, it was played to Yarmoliuk who only had eyes for goal. Sadly for Brentford his effort was deflected wide for another corner. Thomas Frank’s side were putting The Hatters under substantial pressure.

They spent most of the first half trying to find a way through the visitor’s defence but were struggling to create clear-cut chances. Wissa tried his luck from distance but it was a routine save for Kaminski until he took his eye off it and spilled the ball.

Fortunately for Luton he was able to gather it again before any of the onrushing Brentford attackers. Rob Edwards would have been content that in the first half, despite having little of the ball, the hosts had not even come close to scoring.

Thomas Frank must have inspired his players during the interval as it only took four minutes before Neal Maupay bagged his second goal of the season for Brentford. It all started from Chong losing the ball for Luton and taking a bit of a drive looking for a free kick.

The goal just filled Brentford with more confidence as Yarmoliuk twice had shots at goal blocked before the ball went behind for a corner. Mee met the cross, which took a huge deflection off Morris, and ended up in the back of the net.

Luton were creating less than a Tory government and as Brentford played through them, they again had a good sight of goal. Just as Wissa was about to pull the trigger, Mengi came sliding in with a perfectly-timed challenge.

Against the run of play, Ross Barkley rolled back the years as he played a defence-splitting pass to Brown. He took one touch and fired a shot off, which beat Flekken and gave the visitors a glimmer of hope of getting something from this game.

The Bees came forward looking to kill the game off and as player after player tried to pull the trigger, Luton put their bodies on the line. The problem was, they weren’t clearing it, and it was eventually tucked home by Baptiste to surely put this game to bed.

Lewis-Potter did brilliantly in the build up to the goal, getting three shots off, which were all blocked. On the balance of play, it was nothing more than Brentford deserved in a game that they had dominated from the kick-off.

Frank’s side were to have a late scare as Chong headed home from close range but the assistant immediately raised his flag for offside. As the replay showed, the Luton midfielder was a few yards ahead of play after a poorly-timed run.

Brentford took all the points and will be glad to get back to winning ways after two defeats. It moved them up to tenth in the table, only a couple of wins away from the European spots. For Luton, they remained just above the bottom three but it was back to the drawing board for them.
