Brighton 4 Tottenham 2

The Seagulls welcomed Ange Postecoglou’s side to the Amex Stadium with Tottenham feeling as though they had put their poor run of form behind them. They were now focussed on trying to cement a Champions League spot for next season.

Spurs may want to change their mail carrier as Roberto de Zerbi’s side most certainly did not receive this script. Joao Pedro weaved his way through the defence before picking out Hinshelwood at the back post and the teenager drove his shot into the roof of the net.

As a corner was whipped into the box, it was met by the head of van Hecke who thundered his effort off the foot of the post. In the melee that followed, Welbeck ended up on the floor claiming he was fouled and prevented from getting to the ball.

The referee did not award anything but a VAR review quickly decided otherwise and Kulusevski’s pull on the striker’s shirt was to cost them dearly. Joao Pedro stepped up and sent Vicario the wrong way as he buried the ball into the bottom corner.

De Zerbi’s side were giving the home fans a performance like last season as they started to dominate Tottenham and Postecoglou was looking angry on the touchline. The Australian boss obviously felt that his side were rolling over for Brighton far too easily.

James Milner then began to rollback the years as he cut inside before getting a shot away. His first effort was blocked but as he regathered the ball, he looked to curl one in the far corner, only to see his shot crack against the woodwork and come back out.

Spurs then created their first chance of the game as the impressive Johnson found Richarlison in the middle of the goal, outside the box. His first time effort seemed to get a slight deflection before clipping the outside of the post.

In the second half, Milner played a corner short to the substitute Estupinan. He then hit a wonderous strike from some distance out with Vicario having no chance of saving. It was a definite goal of the month contender from the defender.

Lo Celso then bundled into the back of Ferguson in the box and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Joao Pedro stepped up and continued his 100% record from the spot in British football as he bagged his eleventh penalty.

Things were looking dire for the visitors, while The Seagulls’ fans were hoping to see more goals. This was a throwback to the Brighton we all enjoyed watching so much last season, on their day, capable of demolishing anyone.

The hosts then gifted Tottenham a lifeline as they failed to clear the ball and it was worked to the back post for Veliz to slightly mishit a scruffy shot into the back of the net. At this point, Postecoglou would take a goal anyway they could score.

As Porro then swung a cross into the box, Davies had stayed up from a corner and headed home. You could hear the groans from the home fans who were concerned that their side were going to throw away the win so late in the game.

Fortunately for Brighton, they managed to hold on for all three points, frustrating the visitors. It took The Seagulls up to eighth place in the table but by the end of the gameweek, would see Tottenham drop back out of the top four.
