Burnley 1 Newcastle 4

The Clarets were hoping to keep their feint dreams of Premier League survival alive as they welcomed Newcastle to Turf Moor. Eddie Howe’s side were still hopeful that they could secure some form of European football next season.

Vincent Kompany’s side had the first chance of the game as a pass was played over the top of The Magpies’ defence for Bruun Larsen. He took the ball down well but as he managed to get a shot off, Dubravka was quick off his line to get a block in.

The visitors managed to absorb all the hosts had to throw at them in the early stages. As they came forward on the counter-attack, Isak met the ball at the near post but Muric made the save, only to see Wilson poke home the rebound to give Eddie Howe’s side the lead.

Newcastle further silenced the home faithful as Murphy cut the ball back to Longstaff from the byline and he swept his shot into the far corner to double The Magpies’ lead. Turf Moor fell silent as the Burnley fans felt their survival dreams disappearing.

With the interval looming, Gordon strode into the box before laying it into the path of Guimaraes, who passed the ball into the bottom corner to seemingly put this game to bed. Despite The Clarets’ dominating the early stages of the game, Newcastle’s clinical finishing had undone them.

Gordon was causing all sorts of problems with his pace and trickery and as he ran into the box he was pulled down. The referee immediately pointed to the spot and Isak stepped up to take it but Muric made the save to deny him his 20th goal of the season.

Isak did not have to wait long for that elusive goal as Murphy turned provider once again. He ran to the byline before squaring the ball to find Isak on the edge of the six yard box. He made no mistake this time as he tucked his effort into the roof of the net.

Burnley were sinking without a trace and Turf Moor quickly emptied out. There is nothing to underpin silencing the home crowd like them all heading home with a quarter of the game still to play. Ritchie gave away an unnecessary corner as The Magpies took their foot off the gas.

As the corner was swung in, O’Shea won the header to loop his effort into the far corner to give The Clarets a consolation goal. For the fans who decided to stay until the end, they finally had something to celebrate with their Premier League status seriously in doubt.

Despite creating chances, as they have done all season, Kompany’s side are not clinical enough in front of goal. Add to that, they have proven too easy to score against and this is not a mixture that suggests winning many games.

Newcastle will be pleased with the convincing win and the nature of it. They were ruthless with their chances and made this a comfortable victory before the half-time interval. Eddie Howe’s side moved to sixth in the table and are well placed for European qualification.
