Burnley 2 Tottenham 5

Vincent Kompany’s side welcomed unbeaten Tottenham to Turf Moor, looking to kickstart their return to the top-flight with their first points of the season. Burnley’s fans have been relishing their return to the Premier League since the end of last season but so far it has been somewhat of a horror show.

Ange Postecoglou dropped Richarlison to the bench for this one as the misfiring striker has continued to struggle for goals since his arrival in North London. Captain Son Heung-min was leading the line for Spurs as the manager decided to shuffle his pack.

The hosts made the perfect start with their first real attack of the game when Koleosho broke down the left wing, crossing to find Foster at the near post. He swept the ball passed Vicario in the Tottenham goal.

Clarets’ fans have not had a huge amount to cheer this season but suddenly it seemed their luck may change. Sadly, Tottenham had not got the memo and when Solomon found Son in the box, he delicately finished with a chip over the onrushing Trafford to equalise.

Maddison almost gave the visitors the lead when he played a neat one-two with Sarr before looking to curl one in the bottom corner but was denied by a smart save from Trafford. Just before the interval, Burnley failed to clear a Tottenham corner before the ball broke to Romero on the edge of the box. The full-back rifled the ball into the back of the net.

Kompany seemed to rally the troops at half-time as Koleosho threatened the visitors’ defence before Brownhill shot from distance, with the ball narrowly going over the crossbar. Vicario was at full stretch, unsure whether the effort was heading in.

Udogie won the ball for Spurs and fed it to Maddison who is on top of his game at the moment. The midfielder tried his luck from distance with an effort Trafford could get nowhere near, to make it 3-1 to the visitors.

Burnley did not give up and when Foster ran through towards goal, his shot deflected off the sliding Romero and Vicario had to tip it over the crossbar. So nearly a way back into the game for Vincent Kompany’s side.

Tottenham’s new signing Solomon was involved again as he laid the ball on a plate to Son, who side-footed it in from the penalty spot. Three minutes later the skipper ensured he was taking the match ball home when he got his hat-trick after a sublime pass from Porro.

The Clarets were sinking without a trace as home fans headed to the exits to make the trip home a little earlier than expected. It is something no one likes to see in football, you’ve paid for the ticket, stay until the end.

Brownhill got a late consolation for the hosts in added time but it was Tottenham who were heading home with the points and in Son’s case, the match ball too. The look on Vincent Kompany’s face said it all, his side cannot buy a win at the moment.

In the Premier League, conceding goals so easily can make for an impossible task and somehow Burnley need to find a way to shore up their defence. They have conceded 11 goals in their opening three games and unless something changes, they could be making a quick exit out of the division.
