Everton 1 Luton Town 2

Everton welcomed Luton Town to Goodison Park after an impressive win at Brentford the week before had seen them pick up their first win of the season. The home fans were hoping to see two wins on the spin for the first time since Andy Gray and Richard Keys were shipped off to the Middle East to work.

Watching The Toffees at home has been like watching a car crash in slow motion of late but surely today was going to be the day where Sean Dyche’s side put their demons to bed. They started well when Dwight McNeil struck a volley narrowly wide from outside the box.

The visitors forced their first corner of the game and as Lockyer was found unmarked in the box, he headed the ball well over the bar. Morris was next to miss a header from a set piece as it deflected off Tarkowski and went out for another corner.

As Morris met this one, it hit the crossbar and deflected off wannabe dinosaur Jordan Pickford and as Ashley Young tried to clear off the line, he could only strike it off Lockyer and into the goal. Everton’s new owners, 777 investments were at this game but the performance on the pitch was more like 666.

As Doughty clipped a free kick into the back post, the impressive Morris struck a half volley into the corner to put the visitors two-nil up. Needless to say Pickford was unable to get a hand to ball, due to his arms only being six inches long. This is why you see very few velociraptor goalkeepers.

Everton had their first real glimpse of goal when McNeil’s cross to the back post was met by the head of Garner but his effort hit the top of the crossbar and went over. The Toffees managed to score when Onana went in to meet a cross, which was parried by Kaminski.

As Doucoure tried, unsuccessfully, to scramble it over the line it was knocked in at the far post by Calvert-Lewin to give the home fans hope that they could turn this game around. VAR checked it and the goal stood.

The second half was mainly uneventful apart from when Doughty lifted a cross to the back post where it was headed back across goal as Pickford flapped at it like somebody getting into struggles swimming, before Morris put the ball over the line.

VAR checked the goal and fortunately for The Toffees they were all back from their coffee break and ruled the goal out for offside. The replays showed that for once, their decision was the correct one. Sadly, this seems a rare occurrence nowadays.

Everton created a chance to equalise as Harrison headed the ball at the back post across goal but Beto headed over the bar, not troubling the keeper. In the dying moments, another cross found the Everton striker but he proved that he really has a head like a fifty-pence piece as his effort went harmlessly over the bar.

It was a fourth defeat at home for Everton this season and unless things start to change soon, their season-ticket holders are going to have to list sadomasochism as a hobby on their Tinder profiles for putting themselves through this on a weekly basis. For Luton and their travelling fans, they were rewarded with a first win in the Premier League this season.
