Luton Town 1 West Ham 2

The Hatters went into this game still looking for their first points of the season while the visitors, West Ham, were enjoying one of their best starts to a Premier League campaign. Finally Luton were able to play a game at Kenilworth Road after redevelopments took longer than expected.

West Ham had to weather a storm to start with as the home faithful got behind their team and tried to put Areola’s goal under some pressure. The Hammers’ keeper spilled a cross but fortunately for him his defenders were able to clear the ball.

Luton Town’s players really put their bodies on the line when it comes to defending and it was no different here. As they blocked several shots, the ball came out to Benrahma on the edge of the box but as he tried to bend one in the top corner it went well over.

James Ward-Prowse is involved in everything good that David Moyes’ side do this season. He started the move which ended with Paqueta clipping a ball to the back post where it was met by the head of Jarrod Bowen. The Luton keeper could not keep it out and the visitors had the lead.

The only person who cannot be seeing the performances of West Ham’s new signing is Gareth Southgate as he continues to pick players who are not even playing for their teams. Maybe this is some sort of cry for help regarding the England manager’s mental health.

West Ham continued to put the pressure on the hosts and had the ball in the net once again as Antonio held it up for Emerson to fire home. The linesman immediately raised his flag as the striker had just strayed offside.

The Hatters were struggling to create any chances at all against Moyes’ side and found themselves two goals behind when Zouma headed home a Ward-Prowse corner in the final moments of normal time.

Luton Town then threw caution to the wind and centre back Andersen was able to flick one on to see it nestle in the back of the net. They continued to press in added time and had a shout for a penalty when Ward-Prowse seemed to handle from a corner.

VAR reviewed the incident but decided it was not to be as they once again did not want to overrule their on-field ‘friend’. Ooh football friend. West Ham weathered the storm and were able to come away with all three points to put them top of the Premier League table, albeit temporarily. The Hatters are finding it a tough introduction to life in the top-flight, they will need to find their feet sooner rather than later if they are to make it a continued stay.
