Luton Town 1 Wolves 1

As early in the season as it is, this was already being billed as a relegation six-pointer when Luton Town welcomed Wolves to Kenilworth Road. Rob Edwards’ side were finding life at the top tough in the opening few games and were hoping home advantage would count.

Luton dominated the early stages of the game and had their first real chance when Morris picked the ball up in midfield and ran towards goal before unleashing an effort that thundered back off the woodwork, much to the disbelief of the home fans.

Lockyer and Bellegarde then had a coming together in a challenge that seemed to be nothing, but the Wolves player saw the red mist and kicked out at the Luton defender. The referee had no choice but to show Bellegarde a red card for channelling his inner-Beckham against Argentina.

This should have been the platform for Rob Edwards’ side to go on and win the game and when Dawson knocked the ball past Jose Sa, Luton just could not get to the ball first to tap it into an empty net.

Pedro Neto then gave manager Gary O’Neil something to be pleased about when he dispossessed the Luton defender in a wide position, beat Lockyer as he cut inside and sold the dummy to another defender before smashing home a left-footed effort.

The travelling fans erupted once they saw the ball hit the back of the net and some of the locals started to draw the curtains in their terraced houses that surround the ground as it seemed The Hatters were heading for another defeat.

Wolves almost doubled their lead when a free kick was swung into the box and met by the head of Semedo but Kaminski clawed it out before he then blocked Kilman’s follow up. The Luton keeper had really kept his side in the game with that double save.

Luton then came on the attack themselves and as Wolves looked to get players in between the hosts and goal, Kabore’s cross struck the arm of Gomes and the referee immediately pointed to the spot. VAR reviewed it and decided that the decision was good.

Carlton Morris stepped up to the spot and stroked the ball into the bottom corner, sending Jose Sa the wrong way in the process. Kenilworth Road erupted and many locals had their afternoon tea disrupted as the windows on their houses shook.

Luton had thought they had got a winner when Ogbene got on the end of a deflected effort to slot home but the assistant referee immediately raised his flag and the replays showed the Luton player was well offside as he got on the end of it.

Sa then came to get a cross and got it all wrong as the ball dropped to Woodrow on the edge of the box, who then tried to chip the keeper but his effort landed on the roof of the net. That was the last chance of the game and the points were shared, not helping either side.

Rob Edwards was happy that his side showed more of what they were about and took their first point of the season and will look to build some confidence from the result. Gary O’Neil voiced his disappointment with the penalty decision as the ball struck his player’s thigh before hitting his hand, something which he does not believe warrants a spot-kick.
