Man Utd 1 Luton Town 0

Man Utd welcomed Luton Town to Old Trafford in a fixture that they had not lost to the away side in since 1899. That kind of feels like it was the last season the Red Devils challenged regularly for the title now, with the Ferguson era a distant memory in the club’s history.

Garnacho started in positive fashion for the hosts and won an early corner. As the ball was played in, it seemed to strike a Luton arm but despite the protests from the usual suspects of Maguire and Fernandes, the referee and VAR felt there was nothing doing.

Rashford then crossed into the box, finding Hojlund two yards out in the centre of the goal, but Kaminski spread himself well to save the shot. The Man Utd striker continues to look for his first league goal for his new club.

Erik ten Hag’s side were dominating and Dalot swung a cross into the box, which was met by McTominay, but he could not keep his header down as it spooned over the crossbar. It only seemed a matter of time before United opened the scoring.

Luton had their first break of the game and seemed to open up the host’s defence all too easily as it was crossed into the box for Morris to have a free header but fortunately for the home fans Onana was able to make an acrobatic save.

Garnacho found himself one on one with the keeper but dwelled on the ball for too long before trying to take it around Kaminski. The Luton defenders managers to get back and snuff out the chance for Man Utd youngster.

As the second half started, United had a free kick out wide, Hojlund rose at the near post to meet it but was unable to direct his effort anywhere near goal. The Danish striker really cannot buy a goal in the Premier League.

Finally the deadlock was broken as the visitors struggled to clear their lines from a corner and when Fernandes struck the ball back towards goal, Lindelof was to prove an unlikely scorer as he drilled the loose ball into the net.

Ten Hag’s side were starting to get more chances and as Rashford found himself in acres of space in the box, he shifted the ball onto his right foot and let rip but hit his effort straight at Kaminski in the Luton Town goal.

It is amazing to think that no more than a year ago Man Utd fans were lamenting the striker for being the best in the world yet his dip from form currently, which has seen him score 1 goal in 1,252 minutes of football, would make you wonder if he is even the best striker in his own family.

Fernandes whipped a ball in from the right wing, which was met by the head of McTominay, but Kaminski got down well to save in the bottom corner of the goal to keep his side in this one-sided game.

As the match headed into added time, a worried looking Erik ten Hag was nervously tapping his watch looking at the referee, showing the current plight of the Dutch manager. His side held on and took the three points, which was much needed.

Man Utd fans are right to be worried about how wasteful their side are in front of goal, this will cost them points unless it is addressed but fortunately against sides like Luton Town, they did just enough to get the win.

For Rob Edwards’ side, this was never going to be an easy task, trying to survive in the Premier League but at least they are looking more competitive in these games. These are not the sort of games they will have pinpointed as ‘must win’ games.
