Man Utd 4 Sheff Utd 2

After sealing their progress to another FA Cup final, Man Utd welcomed Sheff Utd to Old Trafford as they tried to secure European football for next season. It was a game the Red Devils should be up for as it was starting to look like this was another Championship side in the making they were facing.

The hosts started on the front foot as Dalot shot from outside the box. His effort seemed to be heading in the top corner but Foderingham made a superb one-handed save to tip the effort over the crossbar. The home faithful were loving the early attacking intent.

Garnacho was dispossessed in his own half and The Blades broke but Archer dragged his shot wide of the goal. Brereton Diaz then had the next chance but his effort had nowhere near enough power to cause any problems for Onana in the United goal.

Foderingham was called into action once again as Garnacho danced past the defence before trying to pass the ball into the bottom corner. The Sheff Utd keeper got down well to save, ensuring he beat it wide of the goal as any coaching manual will tell you.

Something you won’t often see in any goalkeeping coaching manual are the antics of Andre Onana. He passed the ball straight to Bogle who ran through on goal and drilled the ball past the keeper to give the visitors the lead.

Fernandes then tried to work a cross into the box but it was half-cleared. Garnacho got to the byline to recycle it and Maguire flicked on at the near post to find the far corner. The defender had come back to haunt the club where it all started for him.

Garnacho could have had such a different first half. He had another chance to score but the in-form Foderingham once again made a fantastic one-handed stop. He was single handedly keeping his side in this game as they headed in at the break.

Soon after the restart Osborn got to the byline and cut the ball back. Brereton Diaz was there to slot home and give the visitors the lead once again. The away end at Old Trafford was in raptures as they dreamt of a rare away win for their side.

Bruno Fernandes then played a great pass over the top of the defence to Dalot but the defender fluffed his lines when it mattered. Moments later United’s skipper swung in a free kick and a penalty was awarded for a foul on Maguire, despite Dalot turning the ball home.

Fortunately for the hosts, their captain was able to slot home the penalty and draw the sides level. Finally the home end had something to celebrate rather than bemoan. The game was really open and it was anyone’s guess who would prevail.

Fernandes came to their rescue once again as he struck a left-footed shot into the top corner from outside the box. The Portuguese midfielder has saved Man Utd countless times this season and this game was no different.

He then turned provider as he put it on a plate for Hojlund in the box. The striker poked home past Foderingham to ensure that the Red Devils were to take all three points. That will be the focus for the fans but this side still look very disjointed under Erik ten Hag.
