Sheff Utd 0 Tottenham 3

The Blades were resigned to the fact that next season they would be plying their trade in the Championship once again. They welcomed Tottenham to Bramall Lane, with the hosts hoping to put in the sort of performance their fans had deserved for what they have endured this campaign.

Sheff Utd started well and should have taken the lead when Brereton-Diaz was put through on goal. He smashed his volley over the bar which summed up why his side are rooted to the bottom of the table. The Premier League is not a forgiving league for sides who do not take their chances.

A familiar sight then reoccurred as Tottenham scored with their first attack. At times this Sheff Utd defence look like they have never played football before this game. Kulusevski finished well as his shot clipped the inside of the far post on its way into the goal.

Ange Postecoglou’s side grew in confidence as Sheff Utd failed to clear their lines from a corner. Bentancur tried his luck from the edge of the box, only to see his effort hit the inside of the post. Son followed up with a shot but Foderingham did well to make a save to deny him.

Son then cut through the hosts defence before playing a clever ball into the path of Maddison. He could not take his chance as his effort was well blocked by the advancing Foderingham. It has been a disappointing start to his Tottenham career for the former Leicester City man.

Into the second half and the visitors continued to apply the pressure. Son did well down the left, getting to the byline before cutting it back to Maddison. His shot was blocked and van de Ven almost capitalised but The Blades’ keeper saved once again.

Johnson was the first to react to the rebound, laying it into the path of Porro who thundered the ball into the back of the net. It was no more than Tottenham had deserved, since their opener they had been all over Chris Wilder’s side.

Maddison then turned provider as he played it into the path of Kulusevski. He passed the ball into the back of the net to add some icing to the cake of this performance by the North Londoners. Despite missing out on a top four place, this result adds some positivity for the fans.

Tottenham should have added another as the ball was played into the back post, only to see Johnson blast his shot over the crossbar. Ange Postecoglou’s side had won this game comfortably and there seemed to be a huge gulf between the two sides.

After the game, Postecoglou was asked whether he would have taken fifth place if offered it at the start of the season. His snappy reply was ‘I would never accept fifth place mate, it is first place or nothing for me’. Good luck with that at Tottenham.

For Sheff Utd, Premier League football is no more. The Blades will be remembered for quite a few things, most notably the 104 goals they conceded in the season. This is a record in the league and there can be no arguments about their fate.
