Sheff Utd 2 Luton Town 3

Chris Wilder’s side welcomed Luton Town to Bramall Lane with both sides fresh from impressive results. Even this early in the season, this game was the ultimate three-pointer as if either side were to survive in the Premier League, this was a must-win game.

In so many games this season, both of these sides have had to concern themselves with defending for the majority of the game. As both managers had seen this as a winnable game, the gloves were off and attacking was on the Christmas menu.

Luton started to play some nice football and as the ball was worked out wide to Doughty, he skipped inside his marker into the box. As he ran towards goal, from a tight angle, he only had one thing on his mind. His shot went straight through Foderingham’s hands, and legs, into the back of the net.

The Sheff Utd keeper has put in some impressive performances this season to give his side a chance in games but he was certainly culpable for their going behind in this one. The Luton defender should never be scoring from where did, especially with the effort he mustered.

Osho then fouled McBurnie on the edge of the box. Hamer tried his luck with a curling effort but Kaminski made a good save. The Blades then had another effort, which took a wild deflection, just going over the top of the crossbar.

From the resulting corner, Trusty met the cross at the near post with a solid header, only to see it clip the upright and go wide. In the space of a few minutes, The Blades had created more chances than they did in the entire game before it.

It gave the hosts some confidence and they started the second half as they ended the first. Baldock swung a teasing cross into the box and Mengi volleyed over his own crossbar, but it really could have gone anywhere, including his own net.

Souza then gifted the ball to Townsend, who went on a run towards The Blades’ goal. He fired off a shot that narrowly whistled over the crossbar, although Foderingham gave the impression that he had the shot covered all of the way.

Bramall Lane was on the edge of their seats when McAtee ran towards goal, before being hacked down on the edge of the box. He reacted quickly and played the ball from the floor to McBurnie who found the back of the net to draw the hosts level.

Sheff Utd were causing problems and how the ball didn’t go over the line would baffle most physics professors but as Luton tried to scramble it clear, Ahmedhodzic drilled the ball into the back of the net to turn the game on its head.

Neither defence covered themselves in glory in this game and as Morris whipped a dangerous cross into the box for the visitors, Robinson got a telling touch to divert it past his own keeper and into the net. Home fans looked dejected as they thought they were on their way to three points.

This gave The Hatters some confidence and it was the same player, Morris, who twisted and turned in the box and looked to cross. It hit the knee of Ben Slimane and straight into the net for a second own goal in the space of four minutes.

Chris Wilder’s side tried to throw everything at Luton in the closing stages of the game. As the visitors tried to block their advance, the ball deflected into the air for Osula to try an audacious overhead kick. Kaminski made a great instinctive save to turn it over the bar.

Rob Edwards’ side defended like their lives depended on it for the remainder of the game and held on to take all of the points. It was a rollercoaster of a game, swinging one way and then the other, but for the visitors it was to prove a massive win.
