Sheff Utd 2 Wolves 1

No side has ever avoided relegation having only taken one point from their first ten league games. Sheff Utd welcomed Wolves to Bramall Lane looking to try and get their first win of the season at the eleventh time of asking.

It was wetter than an otter’s pocket in Sheffield for the game, however, the visitors fashioned the first chance as Cunha got a shot away only to see Foderingham get a fingertip to the effort to turn it over the bar.

Wolves continued to cause The Blades problems and Hwang did all the hard work, twisting and turning past defenders, before almost having an air swipe at the ball with only the goalkeeper to beat.

His sliced effort fell at the feet of Ait-Nouri but the ball seemingly hit the player, more than it was a shot, as it went agonizingly close to the far post. The midfielder could not believe the chance he had missed as the hosts breathed a sigh of relief.

Paul Heckingbottom’s side failed to produce a single chance in a lacklustre first half but must have read his players the riot act in the interval. Soon after the restart, Archer tried his luck from range, with the ball just dipping over the crossbar.

Norwood was the next to try and work Jose Sa from outside the box but it was a disappointing effort as it went well over and into the stands. Finally they found the breakthrough when Archer’s shot hit the underside of the bar, rebounding into the goal.

Having scored late on in the game, Sheff Utd fans started to dream about that elusive first win of the season. All they had to do was hold on for twenty minutes or so. Not an easy task for a side who had let more in than the gates of Glastonbury.

Whenever the ball came into The Blades’ final third, they looked more nervous than an 80s TV star who had been told that Operation Yewtree wanted to speak to them. The home fans, by this stage, had bitten their nails down to the skin.

As a cross came into the box, Bellgarde turned and shot, taking a slight deflection off the defender. With Foderingham at full stretch, ironically, the deflection took it into the top corner and over the despairing keeper’s dive.

It seemed like it was going to be more heartbreak for Sheff Utd and their fans after the visitors clawed their way back into the game in the 89th minute but as with all games now, you have to expect at least ten minutes of added time.

As Norwood’s corner came in, during the 100th minute of the game, Wolves could not clear their lines. As Fabio Silva swiped at the ball, Baldock went down in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. VAR checked it and saw no issue with the decision.

Oliver Norwood stepped up and thundered his effort into the top corner and Bramall Lane erupted as they knew it would guarantee a first win of the season. Wolves will feel hard done by yet again but it was a massive result for Heckingbottom and his side.

Gary O’Neil said after the game he did not feel it was a penalty but was composed in his disappointment, maybe something that Mikel Arteta could learn from. Form in temporary, class is permanent. The Wolves manager showed his in the post-match interviews.
