Tottenham 1 Wolves 2

Ange Postecoglou’s side welcomed Wolves to North London with both sides happy to see players back from the Asian Cup. For Tottenham, they were looking for victory to go some way towards their goal of achieving Champions League qualification this season.

Wolves had the first big chance of the game when Semedo forced a good save from Vicario. As the ball rebounded out to Hwang, the keeper was still on the floor as he blazed his volley over the crossbar. Gary O’Neil had his head in his hands on the touchline.

As Tottenham passed the ball around, looking for an opening, a half-cleared cross dropped to Davies on the edge of the box. His volley fizzed narrowly over the bar, although it seemed Jose Sa had the shot covered all of the way.

The visitors started putting some pressure on the hosts and won a series of corners. As one such corner came into the box. Joao Gomes rose to flick the ball into the far corner for his first goal of the season to send the away end into raptures.

He was completely unmarked in the centre of the goal and Ange Postecoglou will have been scratching his head, wondering what his defence was doing. Being the Tottenham manager can certainly be bad for your health and well-being at times.

Dawson then put in a great cross to the back post, which was met on the volley by Sarabia. Vicario made a superb one-handed save to keep Spurs in the game, although the linesman’s flag went up after the event as per usual.

Whatever the manager said at half-time seemed to work as Kulusevski waltzed his way through the Wolves defence before slotting the ball through the legs of Jose Sa to draw Tottenham level. It was some woeful defending by the visitors to concede the goal.

Wolves were not giving up on coming away from the capital with a win as Semedo crossed into the box to find Sarabia but once again Vicario made a great stop to deny him. If it wasn’t for the Tottenham keeper, this game could have already been beyond them.

It is the one question of this Spurs team under their new manager, playing such a high line, leaves them open to attack. It helps them when coming forward as they always look dangerous but it rarely leaves their keeper with a moment to himself.

Udogie and Maddison then combined to find Kulusevski on the edge of the box. He looked to bend one in the far corner but was denied by a fantastic save from Jose Sa as he got down well to turn the effort around the post.

As Spurs looked to try and find a winner, the visitors cleared and broke with real pace. The hosts were all trying to get back in position as Neto ran down the right wing before cutting it back for Joao Gomes to drill the ball home to give Wolves the lead.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium fell silent as the travelling fans celebrated in the away end. It seems this Spurs team have the capability to hit the self-destruct button at a moment’s notice and test the patience of their supporters.

Postecoglou’s side were to create one more chance as Kulusevski lifted a ball into the box to find Davies unmarked, six yards from goal. He got his header all sorts of wrong as it came off his head at a right angle, with the defender holding his head in his hands.

Gary O’Neil’s side came away from North London with all three points and a big win against a side they were not expected to beat. He has his team playing some fantastic football and they are getting their just desserts for their build-up play.
