Tottenham 2 Sheff Utd 1

New manager Ange Postecoglou was enjoying an unbeaten start to the season with his Spurs side, as they welcomed the visit of winless Sheff Utd to North London. Fans were expecting a convincing win at home against the newly promoted side.

Maddison was pulling the strings early on as he played an intelligent flick to Kulusevski who in turn found Bissouma, weaving his way past the defence only to see his shot saved by Foderingham in the Sheff Utd goal.

Son was the next player to test the keeper as he turned onto his favoured right foot to look to bend one in the bottom corner from distance but the keeper made a good save low down to his left as the ball bounced just in front of him.

The visitors came forward for the first time and as the ball was cut back from the byline by Bogle, Vicario made a great save to deny McAtee and keep the scores level. Things just aren’t going the way of The Blades at the moment.

Solomon dribbled the ball along the edge of the box before managing to get a shot away but the impressive Foderingham made another smart save. The keeper has been a busy bee in these opening matches of their Premier League campaign.

In the early stages of the second half, Solomon proved too quick for McBurnie and his mistimed tackle was to earn him a yellow card. No arguments there from the Sheff Utd forward. It was the ultimate example of a ‘striker’s challenge’.

As a long throw came into the Spurs’ box, Hamer struck the ball first time as it dropped to him and the ball thundered in off the far post to put the visitors in the lead. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium fell silent.

Tottenham new-boy Brennan Johnson thought he had got his first goal for Postecoglou’s side as the stadium erupted but he was to be denied by VAR as replays showed that he had just started his run a little too early and strayed offside.

It looked as though Spurs were going to suffer their first defeat of the season but as the fourth official held his board up, twelve minutes of added time was to be played. The home fans felt there was still time as they cheered the news.

The look on the Sheff Utd players’ faces said it all when they saw it, gone are the days where you can play for the 90 minute mark to take the points, there is so much stoppage time this season people are having to cancel plans for the evening. That takes some explaining to the other half when you went to watch a 3pm kick-off.

As Perisic whipped in a corner, Richarlison leapt to meet it with a glancing header, Foderingham had no chance to keep it out. North London erupted like news had broke that Arsenal had gone into administration.

Like the script from a Hollywood film, you knew there was going to be more drama. Richarlison found Kulusevski in the box, who did well to get the ball from under his feet, before sweeping the ball into the back of the net.

Sheff Utd were broken and as they pushed forward trying to find an equaliser, McBurnie was penalised for pulling Johnson to the ground. The forward told the referee he was pulling his shirt and showed him a yellow card for his troubles, quickly followed by a red.

For Tottenham it was a great comeback, showing grit to fight until the final whistle. For Sheff Utd, the defeat was a cruel blow as the added time was just too much to hold out. For football, once again card-happy referees stamp their authority on the game like the East German Stasi.
