Wolves 0 Brentford 2

Wolves were bang in form as they welcomed Brentford to Molineux. Some fans had started to dream of European football as Gary O’Neil had seemed to turn this side around. Premier League safety was more the concern for Thomas Frank’s side.

Jose Sa almost gifted the visitors the lead with a poor pass out. It was threaded through to Maupay who looked to score but the Wolves’ keeper redeemed himself as he blocked the shot at the expense of an early corner.

On-loan Reguilon swung in a cross from a short corner and Maupay met it with a solid header into the bottom corner. Sa made a fabulous one-handed save and collected the ball at the second time of asking before anyone else could react.

The Bees were starting to play some brilliant football and as Reguilon’s ball across the six yard box was met by Collins at the back post, it had to be a goal. Somehow, he failed to turn it in and Roerslev met the loose ball and thundered his shot high into the stands.

This was one-way traffic from the visitors and they soon forced another set-piece with some neat build up play. As the corner was whipped in, Norgaard had the simplest of headers into the net from only two yards out to give Brentford the lead.

Thomas Frank’s team were looking like the side that threatened for a spot in Europe last season, before falling away towards the end of the season. They had absolutely played Wolves off the park in the first half of the game.

Just before the interval, Sarabia lifted a cross into the back post, which was met by the head of Neto. He could not have placed it any better before Flekken clawed it off the line on the half-volley. It was a truly stunning save by the Dutch keeper.

As The Bees started the second-half in the same form, Wolves managed to clear the ball and counter-attack. Ait-Nouri steamed down the left wing before playing a ball in behind the defence to pick out Neto. He twisted and turned before shooting but his deflected shot hit the base of the post.

The corner was half-cleared before Wolves recycled the ball. Neto swung in the cross and Dawson got a touch to equalise for the hosts. Sadly for Gary O’Neil, his nemesis VAR, reviewed the incident and adjudged Dawson to be offside and disallowed the goal.

Wolves’ manager has been truly haunted by technology this season and if his family do not reply to any request he makes around the house saying ‘VAR check, not happening’ then they are truly missing out on some comedy gold.

To make matters worse, his side tried to play the ball out from the back and lost possession. Janelt picked it up and crossed the ball with Toney meeting it to double the lead for the visitors. It left Wolves deflated and they offered very little in the remainder of the game.

The return of Ivan Toney has proved just the kickstart The Bees needed this season. Maupay is also in fine form and the pair are looking a formidable double act. Thomas Frank’s side are now six points clear of the bottom three.
