Wolves 1 Burnley 0

Wolves welcomed Burnley to Molyneux with the visitors brimming with confidence after beating Sheff Utd five-nil on the weekend. Gary O’Neil was keen to get a win as their season had not yet delivered the points their performances deserved, mainly thanks to VAR.

The hosts tried to press early on and Sarabia tried his luck from the edge of the box. It ballooned into the air after a deflection and Trafford was forced to tip the effort over the crossbar. It was plain to see that O’Neil’s side were keen to test the keeper today.

Burnley had the first real opportunity to break the deadlock when a cross found an unmarked Rodriguez five yards out. Bentley made a great block to deny him, then even better when he turned Brownhill’s effort around the post, which looked destined for the bottom corner.

Sander Berge then got his side into all sorts of trouble as he overran the ball, gifting it to Sarabia, who found Cunha. His ball found Hwang at the back post who slotted past Trafford to make it one-nil to the hosts.

Gary O’Neil’s side felt that Burnley were there for the taking and continued to press into the second half. As Sarabia’s cross to the back post was met by Dawson on the volley, there was no one there to tap the ball home.

Sarabia was haunting the visitor’s defence all evening and when Wolves won a free kick, just outside the box, he thought his effort was heading into the top corner. Trafford did well to tip the ball over the bar at the expense of a corner.

Vincent Kompany will have been disappointed with the lack of openings his side were creating, as they rarely tested the Wolves defence. After scoring so freely against The Blades, they seemed to have lost their cutting edge by the time this game came around.

Berge managed to win a corner for the visitors but as the cross was headed clear, it found Vitinho just outside the box. He controlled it on his knee and went for goal but Bentley always had it covered as it headed over the crossbar.

Gary O’Neil’s side held on for what was a comfortable victory, putting themselves nine points clear of the relegation zone. Meanwhile Burnley are well and truly involved in that scrap, four points from safety with their plight looking bleak.

Kompany said how pleased he was with his side’s performance, considering they had just come up to this league but it is points that matter. The club’s owners will not be reflecting on these positives when they plan their season in the Championship next year, that is for sure.
