Wolves 2 Chelsea 1

Gary O’Neil’s side welcomed Chelsea to Molineux, unbeaten in six games at home. Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been about as predictable as Donald Trump this season, literally anything could happen and nobody knows what.

In his press conferences the new Chelsea manager has been like a girl trying to convince herself that she can get her partner to change. Focussing on the future, how good things can be and talking about long term goals despite the now being an absolute horror show.

Being a Chelsea fan at the moment should be something you can get medication for, just by showing a pharmacist your replica top. They start games well, play some decent football, Sterling gives hints of the player he once was at Man City, only to find it was all a rouse to get you interested.

You convince yourself that players must be good as you’ve paid in excess of £100m for them and surely no businessman would even be in a position to spend that sort of money if they didn’t understand asset values and profit models.

But sadly no, it seems the whole business model at Chelsea is to pay over the odds for players who are never going to produce, like Todd Boehly has been told to spend £1bn in a year without anything for to show for it, and someone will give him £10bn. Brewster Millions reboot, West London style.

Sterling dispossessed Gomes to have a clear route to goal with no one else around. He had Palmer to his right and to his right was Jackson. Only the keeper stood in their way. Rather than squaring it to either player, to roll it into an empty net, he took the shot on and Jose Sa saved.

The first half offered nothing much for fans of either side to get excited about. Gallagher tried his luck from distance but hit it straight at the Wolves keeper. Chelsea dominated possession but did nothing with it. Like having a night at the playboy mansion and spending it reading books in Heff’s library.

O’Neil must have given his side the hairdryer treatment at half time as they came back out looking like a different team. Thiago Silva gave the ball away and Gomes shot from the edge of the box but it took a deflection and went just wide of the far post.

Chelsea failed to deal with a number of corners and just half-cleared them. Then Gomes crossed to find Toti at the back post but he headed it straight at Petrovic when either side of the Chelsea keeper would have been a goal.

The hosts then took another corner and Lemina had a free header, not even having to jump, and just guided the ball into the corner of the goal. This had been coming and Pochettino’s side had done nothing to heed the warning signs.

Nkunku came on for Chelsea and almost scored when he diverted a cross towards goal but it was cleared off the line. Then the visitors worked another chance as the ball was played to Sterling at the back post but his effort was deflected wide by Dawson.

As Chelsea were striving for an equaliser, Hwang got to the byline and crossed, only for Badiashile to hash his clearance. Doherty accepted the Christmas present and dispatched it into the bottom corner to surely seal the win for the hosts.

The celebrations of the Wolves’ fans was short lived as Sterling picked out Nkunku in the box for him to head home and score his first Chelsea goal. It was then that the home supporters wondered if their joy was going to be short lived.

Chelsea tried as much as they could muster to create another chance but Wolves held on for the win. It took Gary O’Neil’s side level on points with The Blues in the league. Pochettino continued to talk about ‘sticking to the plan’ in his post-match press conference but it is anyone’s guess what that actually is.
