Wolves 2 Man City 1

Wolves entertained Man City at Molyneux with Gary O’Neil’s side looking to add to their solitary win of the season when they beat Everton at Goodison Park. Pep Guardiola’s side were without the influential Rodri who was serving a three-match suspension from his sending off last week.

Matheus Nunes was facing his old club for the first time since his late transfer to the champions. City created the first chance of the game when Dias found Alvarez who squared the ball across the box but it was just taken off the foot of Erling Haaland.

The impressive Pedro Neto broke and as he looked to cross it, the ball deflected off Ruben Dias and into the Man City net. The home faithful erupted as their side took an unexpected lead against the team with a 100% start to the season.

City tried to get back into the game and were awarded a free kick when Nunes was fouled. The ball was clipped into the box and Ake's acrobatic effort was cleared through a mixture of Jose Sa and the Wolves’ defenders.

Gary O’Neil’s side were causing Man City problems on the counter-attack, something which will have concerned Pep Guardiola. It seemed the visitors were looking as if they had a soft centre without Rodri in midfield to help with defensive duties.

The Molyneux crowd were soon silenced when Julian Alvarez stepped up to take a free kick and bent one over the wall into the top corner, an effort that Jose Sa could not keep out despite getting a solid hand to the ball.

Doku has looked a good signing for City and he continued to cause problems down the left wing for The Citizens but Wolves’ stout defending was keeping the league leaders out. Jose Sa then made a great save from Ake to keep the scores level.

As the hosts countered, Hwang’s effort was blocked but as the ball was laid back to him by Cunha, he stroked the ball into the net with Ederson nowhere to be seen. The tattooed keeper was out of position having tried to win the ball off Cunha in the build-up.

Man City continued to knock on the door but were struggling to create clear-cut chances. Kyle Walker had a shot from outside the box but it was easily saved by the Wolves’ keeper. O’Neil’s side managed to hold on for the win and a huge three points.

Aside from the result, there were rumours that Erling Haaland was on the pitch today but the veteran Craig Dawson kept him very quiet. Pep Guardiola seemed punch-drunk in his post-match interview as he even forgot the name of Wolves’ scorer of the winning goal, calling him ‘the Korean lad’.

It was a second defeat for Man City, in the space of four days, and will give the rest of the league hope that the defending champions are not unbeatable. At times this season, Wolves have looked seriously lacking firepower up top but they dispelled those myths in this game.
